removal process OF STEERING CLUTCHES

The D4 work to remove and repair steering clutches is not as bad and above pic shows the right side once out which was working. Note the gaps between each plate against the one below right rear side. The thickness of the steering clutch disc between the face of the inner clutch drum and pressure plate is 3 7/16" which is normal and 3 5/8 " max and should not be below 31/8". Disc can be added to bring the measurement up to 3 5/8" If you look above at the top is 2 plates. Measure from the top of this plate [not the housing ] to the bottom of the last disc not the bottom housing. To do the removal process one needs access to HD gear like 65mm socket and jigs and pullers HD. To get done at a Engineering shop may cost around $1- 2000NZ without the parts as its time consuming

Exposing the steering clutches

A lot of play in the end plate housing of the steering clutches but note these stay in the CAT while the steering clutches are removed. You will need to prise apart before you extract the steering clutch/bevel unit as one. Check the play in these end steering clutches plates for wear and replace. use new bolts as they are UNF and cheap.

ABOVE: This is the faulty left side and the steering clutches are frozen solid due to water & rust as the machine was sitting for 3 years in the open and are seized so need to be disasembled and clean. A tell take sign is no clear gaps in between each plate.

The right side steering clutch was in OK working order but you will see where the left side is virtually closed up due to water getting in as this machine was sitting. Also theres wear on the teeth as new steering friction plates you will need to clean the drums for them to fit in.

You will see the large nut that you must undo and the rust on the springs on this steering clutch. Note the very large centry bolt but you need to have a strong spring clamp to remove the springs and split collar pins on this faceplate? We made our own jig and can supply/sell our jigs to any would be Cat D4 mechanic.

Once the springs are removed you then need to undo the centre 65mm bolt. It will be tight but use oxy/acetlylene to heat the bolt up.

Once heated then spray penetrating oil over the whole bolt. This will penetrate the thread on the bolt then you can use your 65mm socket to unbolt but we used an impact HD Hitachi drill and both sides came off easy

Both sides will need to be checked and cleaned & its heavy. One side the left was really seized up but see pic. Make sure the springs are good and splines are clean and dry. You need to use a 20tonne press on the clutch assembly when putting back and a puller to take the plates out of each steering clutch side.

We need to replace the bearings to the bevel gear assembly besdie the steering clutch
STEERING CLUTCH PLATES NEW= We can supply new friction plates and steel plates as at August 2011 with out latest shipment coming
