CATERILLAR D4-7U BULLDOZER IN NZ

FOR RESTORATION OF STEERING CLUTCHES

The D4 work to remove and repair steering clutches is not as bad as a D2 but when a machine is old so are the nuts and bolts. We found by hitting the bolts with a hammer it loosened them a bit but it helps to have a good ratchet heavy duty lever arm etc to take the 3/4 bolts off & use CRC or a combination oil loosening agent like diesel fuel and oil mix. Remove inspection plate on rear of transmission cover & loosen steering clutch adjustments until free of their sockets before lifting off the main transmission cover above. Loosen the brake adjustment & swing pedal forward then use a sling (wire strop) to take the cover up and off the transmission section as very heavy. Check flywheel clutch lever is in the forward position to prevent the cams on the shaft in the cover from damaging the gear shift interlock section & the cover will lift off easy. We used our mobile crane to lift the cover

Exposing the rear steering clutches. Jar the rusted parts and use CRC or we use a solution of diesel fuel/oil combination to free up rusted bolts etc. This is the first time these steering clutches have been exposed since new in year 1951 so the whole backend is rusted up. As we are not in a hurry we CRC all rusted bolts etc and let them soak in for a few days and its amazing how this reacts to allowing easier access to bolt removal.

The exposed brake adjusters and drums. Next step is too raise the back end and support the tracks off the ground so we can unbolt the steering clutch bolts on the left above. You will note the bolts holding the brake shoe drums are rusted hard but that OK as we will install new bolts once we replace the pads.

Exposing the steering clutches

Showing the steering clutches & you will see adjusters are unbolted for removal. We next have to raise the whole back end so we can turn the tracks and remove the bolts around the steering clutch casings which are on the far left and far right of this picture. This will allow us access to see the state of the steering clutches.

Although you can remove the brake bands No2 after the whole unit is removed we are doing this first as the rivets are all rusted and the whole unit needs replacing anycase. You cannot pull the bands from the back so you need to split the bands on the rivets. No4 shows steering clutches to be removed

By removing the pin No1just above you can then access the splines No2 and pull them out thru the back using a bolt in the end of the spline. These pins can be hard toi pull out but use CRC to loosen them We are dismantling the whole unit from inside but bear in mind this can be done if you take steering clutches/ bevel unit out as one unit.

Pic shows brake bands that need replacing. We plan to install complete new sets as the bands themselves are rusted completely
