CATERILLAR D4-7U BULLDOZER IN NZ
FOR RESTORATION OF STEERING CLUTCHES
The D4 work to remove and repair steering clutches is not as bad as a D2 but when a machine is old so are the nuts and bolts. We found by hitting the bolts with a hammer it loosened them a bit but it helps to have a good ratchet heavy duty lever arm etc to take the 3/4 bolts off. You can take the the whole rear end off as one but as we want to redo this piece by piece we took off first the seat/ rear tank then the fender plates on each side and then the top cover. Once done then we will work on the tracks & show you more pics of our work.

Rear tank and seat already removed and one fender. If taking each fender off remember these are heavy so make sure you strop to hold these in place. If undoing the bolts underneath the fender can do damage to you. We used long lever ratchet and used the tracks to brace each fender when they dropped. VERY IMPORTANT

Both fender plates are removed. Remember these are heavy 2 man jobs. Note the 3/4 large rachet we use with steampipe extension and make sure you strop and hold the plates.
