The oil pressure guage on the right was fine once the main motor was started and fired up to normal

The D4 actually started around 1937 with a G4 Series then evolved into the 7U Series of the 1940s and 1950s. The Caterpillar Company continued to build new D4s right up till now and they are a great machine. The smaller D2 was a bit underpowered for the weight but the D4 was another machine and solid as. We had spark problems with the Pony motor magneto but we used our maintenance pickup with compressor to blow out all dust etc in carb & around the engine before we tried to start it. This is important but managed to start this machine after 3 years sitting in the bush in New Zealand. With a bit of ether the main motor started & runs fine just like new ready for its restoration on our farm. The gauges work good. Oil pressure excellent as with fuel pressure

The hydraulics work fine and the rams are in excellent condition for their age. We plan to change the metal rap around hydraulic pipes with new rubber ones and the ones in the front as well. 56D.

A few little rust spots on the rams: use fine emery paper then oil them to clean before starting the D4 to keep these rams in good shape is important

Remember when loading on your truck in NZ this CatD4 blade is approx 4m wide & the limit on the Class 2 road in NZ is 4.1m without using a pilot vehicle. However we put the blade on a tilt which overcomes this problems for removal.
