FACTS, SPECS & INFO ON THIS GREAT BULLDOZER

The D4 actually started around 1937 with a G4 Series then evolved into the 7U Series of the 1940s and 1950s. The Caterpillar Company continued to build new D4s right up till now and they are a great machine. The smaller D2 was a bit underpowered for the weight but the D4 was another machine and solid as. The Pony motor started the machine then the diesel engine kicked in once primed by the 2 cylinder petrol -powered motor. The Pony motor carb kit: CAT part number or better yet the Zenith carb number should be a Zenith K2067 kit. The older D-4s have the same carb kit as a John Deere JD 720 and 730 pony motor

The D4 started out at 35 horsepower, and in later years was upgraded to 43 horsepower. D4 7U has a curb weight of 10,510 pounds. Caterpillar Model D4 was produced from 1939-1959 with 84,497 made. Ours is No 15689 a 1951 model. Our model has a BIRTLEY blade. The Birtley company of Durham, England made these under license to Caterpillar then the Cat company took them over in 1963. The blades are solid as a rock and U shaped frame.

Side track will need link taken out but rollers and sprockets fine.

Full restoration with electric start will be installed once we check steering clutches as the right side steering clutches not too good. For loading we had to adjust the steering clutch right side for loading purposes. The beauty about steering clutches in these models they are accessible under the seat. For a D2 Cat you need to take off the side covers, tracks etc and a headache to do.
