WHY NZ PIG FARMING IS SLOWLY BEING SHUT DOWN AS COUNCIL & HEALTH REGULATIONS SUFFOCATEDTHE PORK INDUSTRY IN FAVOUR OF IMPORTS

 

 

The NZ pig farmers are slowly being suffocated as regulation after regulation makes it more difficult to farm pigs in NZ. What was once a thriving business is now being over regulated but at the same time there have been a few cowboys who have been fined and closed down for bad animal husbandry. Complaints of smells & neighbours complaining can mean an instant $400 fine and if it gets worse closure. Now its getting to the stage where the regulations are strangling those farmers as more rules are imposed. Authorities now want to shut the Industry down it seems. Some irate neighbours are actually previous owners of the same piggeries they are complaining about!! Yes those who sold their farms to would be pig husbandry families only to find out they are now being persecuted and topped to the local Council & Horizons. This means inspections then pay fines. Is it all worth all the trouble if the wind blows the wrong way!!!.

Will you ever be able to afford that house!!!

• Pig farming will it be a thing of the past soon in NZ as imports override Pig farming in NZ as imports now are 1/2 the pork intake of Kiwis.

Heres what happens. If someone files a complaint the local council will walk the boundary and if they smell the pigs then they fine you the $400NZ. Great if the breeze is blowing?? Even when a farmer buys a property and gets approval if the smell travels then you may be forced to close down. Thats the basics of farming pigs in NZ. Animal activists and the Greenies don't help matters and its better to sell then come under the scrutiny of the Councils.

One farmer sdaid he had the OSH comes around and wanting money and then said he had to have regular vet checks and keep a log book which although fair enough was mean't also to make life even harder. The Pork industry is depressed at the moment and many farmers cannot or do not have the funds to bring their businesses up to the standards demanded especially when just the book work of consent etc eat the budget---another typical state NZ is becoming. Yet the imports of Pork origins are never veted to see if they are inhumane so this leaves the poor Kiwi farmer at a disadvantage when he sees pigs being imported from Australia, USA and Scandinavia??

The Animal Welfare Act 1999 (the Act) imposes obligations on every person who owns or is in charge of pigs. This code has been issued pursuant to section 75 of the Act and will provide guidance on how to comply with the legislative requirements. However, this code does not provide an exhaustive list of the Act's requirements, and owners and those in charge of pigs should note that they must comply with the minimum standards in this code and the general provisions in the Act.
