New Zealand Contact Energy have decided to increase their costs to the consumer. Bad not good but they say its because of the increased service costs and getting the power to your home. With inspection using brand new Squirrel helcopters to inspect the lines etc and no doubt salaries and transprot costs increasing the fact remains the consumer in NZ has to pay for these. The retail energy costs used today are approx 7 cents per unit but they say it needs to climb to 10-12cents due to new alternates of wind & gas otpitons for the future --- this means then that future power projects will cost more and the consumer must pay for this. Contact Energy posted a $237 million annual profit this year and a profit of $161m last year, and said an increase of at least 6 per cent was needed as the South island needed more power even though they pay more in the South. But other companies Meridian Energy and Mighty River Power also recently increased prices so its a no win situation.

So for an average Kiwi family with gas etc and no kids the cost of using power in NZ is around $80-$100 but with kids and no alternative using electric appliances the bill now creeps up to $200-$300 per month. Thats a lot of money for those on a mortage for sure and an increase of $14-20 with these new increases only but extends the costs to then householder.

Every year now costs will increase ands servicing costs will go the same way. To build mega projects which should have been done years ago (hey theres only 4m people in NZ) the Energy companies have been too late and now the consumer will again pay. Power improvements, lines relaid, added lines etc all cost an arm and a leg and someone has to pay---but not out of profits. Contact Energy say generation was becoming more expensive, partly because of a 25 per cent increase in the price of natural gas and the company needed capital to fund investments of $600 million this year. Retailers pay lines companies for the use of networks and companies like Contact include a lines charge also in the bills to you.
