In NZ we are reaching epidemic unemployment @ 6.8 % far higher than predicted and recession is around the corner. The government cannot do anything ---theres no jobs. More kids are playing around in small towns and theres doom and gloom looming and Labour created it. Maoris are one of the highest unemployment and its sad to see. Spending has subsided as more families keep away from the easy Eftpos payments and fear the inevitable interest rate rise and loans & spending beyond their means

NZ Beneficiaries & Unemployment increasing August 2010

Yes recession is looming moreso now and no thanks to the policies of the labour Government whose focus is on the benefits and working class. Fonterra has dropped in their payouts yet costs keep rising. New Zealand has a very large current account deficit of 8-9% of GDP. Unemployment rose 19,000 during the June 2010 quarter to reach 159,000, marked by an increase in unemployed males.

Existing mortgages, cost of living and accustomed living standards prevent Kiwi wages from falling to levels that would be competitive with Asia & China. Kiwis have to seek work in their next best alternative when they lose their well-paying manufacturing and high-tech knowledge and service jobs to foreigners. When jobs move out, skills move with them. At the rate at which the NZ is losing factory jobs, for example, how much longer will it be when more factories are gone as NZ costs spiral and make it not competitive anymore? When manufacturing jobs are lost, so are jobs in transport, warehousing, banking and insurance. There is a chain effect that reduces the overall productivity of NZ as a location of economic activity. It is being replaced by Management in overdrive with more bosses and divisions in everything from District Councils to area Health etc than their are Indians (workers) & as more businesses use Oracle software systems computers are taking over from people. Its going to continue as as our farms get cut up for lifestyle blocks nothing becomes viable to produce as the costs far outweight the profits. It also means less jobs out there.

The collapse of world socialism changed circumstances overnight. Our NZ labor now faces direct competition in global labor markets. The excess supply of labor in these markets will drive down wages, salaries and employment in NZ. As the dollar is likely to lose value under pressure from our growing trade deficit, the decline in wages will not be compensated by a decline in prices, and Kiwi living standards will fall. Faced with this NZ has a challenge as the costs for keeping its population on benefits including the Pension scheme needs to be viewed as well as the unnecessary divisions of management that are well over the moon.

COULD EMPLOYERS PAY MORE:??

Paula Rebstock an economist, says employers need to be more actively involved in managing their workers' health issueshelpimg them to get back to work quickly after an illness. Netherlands employers have to pay for most of the costs of their former workers on sickness and disability benefits so could it happen here in NZ
